I'm a bit late on this, but Linux tends to behave a bit differently unless you count just running the aforementioned Windows "PortableApp" through wine, then it's exactly the same. Would it be fine for me to use PortableApps over installing apps like normal, or is there a reason why I should install apps like normal and not use PortableApps? However, I wanted to get some 2nd opinions about my plan before I execute it. So, if I ever make a bunch of changes to a program on one PC, those changes will be synchronized with the same app on another computer. In addition, if I save the portable apps onto a cloud service, or I use a file sync program, and can keep my apps synchronized between computers. Instead of having to install and configure my favorite apps one by one when I'm getting set up on a new PC, I could instead just copy and paste my PortableApps folders from one PC to another and all my favorite apps will be all ready for use. ![]() However, with PortableApps, I only have to login and configure the toolbar for the PortableApps version of Firefox, and if I want to have Firefox on multiple Windows devices, all I have to do is copy all the PortableApps files from one PC to another and Firefox will be all set to go. This all takes some effort, and it can feel like a chore if I have multiple devices that I want to set up Firefox onto. However, when I normally install Firefox onto a new PC, I have to log in to my account, wait for my favorite bookmarks and extensions to all synchronize, and then I have to adjust the toolbar to have it look the way I want it to. I have multiple PCs, and I recently got the idea that instead of installing all my apps/programs onto the PC directly, why not install the "PortableApp" versions of those programs and use a file sync service to synchronize my app files between PCs?Įxample: I like to use Firefox as my default web browser. In case you don't know, there is a site called " PortableApps" where various apps are designed in such a way that you can save the apps on a portable drive, and those apps will work on any computer that is connected to that drive. ![]() If your question doesn't quite fit in any of the above, or is not receiving answers elsewhere, feel free to ask it here.
